Patio Area Calculator

Measure your patio and convert its surface area into square meters, square feet, square yards and other units. Choose a shape, enter your dimensions, and optionally add extra area for cutting waste or spare materials.

Calculate your patio size

Select the closest patio shape and use the same measurement unit for all dimensions.

Use this unit for every dimension in the selected shape.

Rectangle dimensions

A 5–10% allowance is often used for paving cuts and breakage, but follow your material supplier's advice.

How the patio area calculation works

The calculator first converts your measurements into meters. It then calculates the base surface area in square meters and converts that result into other units. The optional allowance is added after the patio's measured area has been calculated.

Area formulas by shape

Rectangle: area = length × width Circle: area = π × radius² Semicircle: area = (π × radius²) ÷ 2 Triangle: area = (base × perpendicular height) ÷ 2 Two sections: area = section 1 area + section 2 area

Example: a rectangular patio

If a patio is 10 meters long and 4 meters wide, its measured area is 10 × 4 = 40 m². With a 10% allowance, the additional area is 4 m², giving a material-planning area of 44 m², approximately 473.61 ft².

Measured area versus material allowance

The measured area describes the actual patio surface. The area including allowance is a planning estimate for purchasing materials. It does not account for individual slab sizes, pattern layouts, edge cuts, drainage requirements or supplier-specific packaging. For ordering, round up to whole packs after checking the coverage listed by the manufacturer.
