How to calculate ceiling surface area
Multiply the width of a rectangular ceiling by its length. If the ceiling consists of several rectangular sections, calculate each section and add the results. Subtract skylights or other openings when those areas will not receive paint or covering.
Use the actual surface dimensions for sloped ceilings rather than the horizontal floor-plan dimensions. For complex ceiling shapes, divide the surface into manageable sections.
Estimating ceiling paint
Paint quantity depends on the surface area, number of coats, and the coverage printed on the product container. Surface texture, porosity, primer, and application technique can change the quantity needed.
Estimating panels and tiles
Calculate the area of one panel by multiplying its width by its length. Divide the ceiling area, including your allowance, by the area of one panel and round up to a whole number. This estimate does not optimize cutting layouts or account for every edge and fitting.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use feet and inches?
Yes. Choose the unit beside each dimension. The calculator converts measurements internally before calculating the area.
Should skylights be subtracted?
Subtract openings that will not be painted or covered. For multiple identical openings, enter their count and the dimensions of one.
How much extra material should I buy?
The appropriate allowance depends on the product, ceiling shape, cutting waste, and surface condition. Follow product instructions and adjust the allowance to your project.
Why can actual paint usage differ?
Coverage varies with surface texture, porosity, preparation, application method, and the number of coats.
