Cement and Concrete Material Calculator

Estimate cement bags, cement weight, sand and coarse aggregate for a specified nominal concrete mix. Enter a known concrete volume or calculate the volume of a rectangular or circular slab or footing.

Important assumptions: This tool estimates materials using nominal volume ratios, an assumed dry-material factor of 1.54 and an assumed bulk cement density of 1,440 kg/m³. These are planning assumptions, not a laboratory-designed concrete mix. Actual quantities depend on material grading, moisture, compaction, cement type, workability and the concrete specification.

Ratios are volume parts in cement : sand : coarse aggregate order. Select the mix specified for your project.

Calculation method and assumptions

1. Calculate the concrete volume

Rectangular slab: length × width × thickness

Circular slab: π × radius² × thickness

You can also enter a known concrete volume directly instead of entering dimensions.

2. Add the optional waste allowance

Adjusted wet volume = project volume × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)

3. Estimate the dry material volume

Dry material volume = adjusted wet concrete volume × 1.54

The factor 1.54 is an approximate planning assumption to account for the difference between loose dry ingredients and the resulting concrete volume. It is not universal and can vary with materials and mix design.

4. Divide by the selected nominal mix ratio

Total ratio parts = cement parts + sand parts + coarse aggregate parts

Cement volume = dry material volume × cement parts ÷ total ratio parts

Sand and coarse aggregate volumes are calculated the same way, using their respective ratio parts.

5. Estimate cement mass and bags

Cement mass (kg) = cement volume (m³) × 1,440 kg/m³

Bag count = cement mass ÷ selected bag size

The displayed whole-bag count is rounded upward.

Example calculation

Suppose the project needs 1 m³ of concrete, uses a nominal 1 : 2 : 3 volume ratio and has no extra allowance.

Under these assumptions, the estimate is about 8 bags of 50 kg cement when rounded up. This example demonstrates the calculator's method; it does not establish that a 1 : 2 : 3 mix is suitable for any particular structural use.
